Course Details

The AIARE 2 is a 24-hour course that provides backcountry travelers an opportunity to advance their decision-making skills in more complicated situations such as being a leader within a small travel group, traveling in more complicated terrain, and/or developing a travel plan where resources are scarce. Sources of uncertainty are addressed throughout the course.

Includes 2 Field days in Truckee area and 2 evening Zoom calls and online study

The AIARE 2 builds on the introductory avalanche hazard management model introduced in the AIARE 1. Students will describe and discuss weather, snowpack and avalanche processes, and identify how these processes relate to observations and travel within avalanche terrain, with their group.

Exclusive to OAC AIARE classes, we provide two bonus classes on using CalTopo mapping software and reading a NWS forecast, and membership in the OAC AIARE Alumni Mentoring FB group. Our classes are also limited to 8 students with 2 instructors, so you'll get plenty of attention from your instructor(s)

Skiers, splitboarders, and snowshoers are all welcome in our courses. Splitboards and avalanche gear are available to rent.
